Announcing the Chaffee Art Center's Annual Gingerbread Contest

The Chaffee Art Center continues the tradition of gingerbread art with its annual Holiday Gingerbread Contest for 2010. Everyone is welcome to join in the holiday celebrations by making your own gingerbread creation and displaying it in a gingerbread village at the Chaffee Art Center. We welcome all types of designs; farms, churches, homes, stores, make believe places, ski lodges and more.

The contest is open to all ages. Businesses, clubs, schools and groups are invited to participate. The rules for the contest are simple - all material must be edible, no kits are allowed, creations must be on a sturdy platform, 15 inches square is the suggested size. You can drop off your creation between 10 and 3 on November 22, 23 or 24. It must be accompanied by an entry form and a $5 fee. You can get an entry form at the Chaffee Art Center, print one from our website, call us at 775-0356 and we will mail it to you, or click here to get one.

The gingerbread creations will be on display at the Chaffee Art Center from November 26 through December 16. Visitors to the gallery will be invited to vote for their top choice from November 27 through December 9. The winner will be announced at the Art Hop Reception on December 10.

Participants can pick up their creations on December 17 or 18 between 10 and 5 so that you can have it at home to enjoy through the holidays! If you have any questions, please call the Chaffee Art Center at (802) 775-0356.

Hop on the Art Hop Bus

Rutland, Vermont - October 1, 2010 - Friday, October 8 from 5 until 8 is Art Hop all around Rutland. This month's Art Hop will include a bus to make travel between each of the venues easy.

Since 2006, the second Friday of the month has been Art Hop night downtown and all around town Rutland. Art Hops, an evening of art, music, revelry and culture, sprung up as a Creative Economy initiative. Galleries and retailers stay open from 5until 8 pm with special exhibits, refreshments, entertainment and artist demos.

The October Art Hop will feature a small bus driving a continuous loop between each of the venues. The locations that will be open on Friday, October 8 from 5 pm until 8 pm include: Art and Antiques, Cafe Terra, Chaffee Art Center, Cold River Frames, Lulu's Artisan Center, Mr. Twitter's, Timco Gallery, and Vermont Creates. The bus will be making four stops: Chaffee Art Center, Mr. Twitter's, Lulu's and the corner of Wales Street and Center Street. Choose one to start your evening, then Hop on the bus to go to the next!

The artwork that will be presented was created by the Woman to Woman Cancer Support group based at Rutland Regional Medical Center. This is a cancer support group for women to share concerns, exchange information and to also offer and receive support to one another. Over several years, watercolor classes have been led by Mary Fran Lloyd and Gillian Greene teaching various techniques. The results are these wonderful, beautiful pieces of artwork and the forming of a bond of friendship that began from a journey none of them had chosen. Though they may not have the same kind of cancers, these survivors have been able to discover a common thread in their healing process using art. With brush strokes infused with encouragement from their teacher and each other, the talent brought forth has surpassed even their own imagination. How amazing! How wonderful! We thank them for allowing us a glimpse into their lives.

The Brick Box at the Paramount is pleased to announce the opening of an exhibit of restored wooden canoes by Ralph Nimtz. Growing up on a small lake in southwestern Michigan, Nimtz learned the art and meditation of restoration through his father's guidance. Now living in Wallingford, Nimtz has a sizable collection of these elegant crafts, some of which will be on display from March 12 through April 6.

Seen from their beauty, these canoes present as graceful lines and the warm glow of wood. Seen from their function, they present transportation and a tool for recreation and relaxation. Seen from their integrity, they are of natural materials fashioned with simple tools. Additionally, in Nimtz's process, there is great satisfaction in uncovering the history of each particular craft and in coming to understand the individual builder's unique design and craftsmanship. And always, the quiet lake beckons.
